Crusades Bookstore Review:
The second in Runciman's classic trilogy, this volume starts at the end of the First
Crusade, and follows the story through the high water mark of the Latin Kingdom up to its
near-destruction by Saladin. First published in 1951, Runciman's books remain the
standards by which others are judged. A fine academic, his rhetorical style is such that
his books read more like novels. More modern works provide a somewhat more accurate
picture, but this book is still an ideal starting point.
From the Cover:
Sir Steven Runciman has written a book which, from beginning to end,
enthrals the layman as completely as it satisfies the historian. The excitement of battle,
the horror of senseless massacre, the interplay of personalities and ambitions, the effect
on the whole development of European history - these are his themes. As he rightly states:
'The whole tale is one of faith and folly, courage and speed, hope and disillusion.'
This volume vividly records the Frankish years of glory and their end, from the
foundation of the Kingdom of Jerusalem to its reconquest by Saladin.
About the Author:
