The Crusades Bookstore Review:

This book is a collection of nine essays based upon papers presented at the London Centre for the Study of the Crusades conference, 'Deus Vult: The Origins and Impact of the First Crusade', held at the Institute of Historical Research, London, on 25 November 1995.

The essays themselves are well-written and accessible, and provide a great way to get a feel for recent research into the First Crusade. If you only ever buy one book on the Crusades, don't buy this one! But if you want a deeper knowledge of the motives and mentality of the Crusaders, this book is definitely worth a look.

The essays included are:

  • Patronage and appeal of the First Crusade, John France,
  • Peter the Hermit and the Chroniclers, Colin Morris,
  • The diplomatic of the First Crusade, Marcus Bull,
  • The First Crusade: reviewing the evidence, Susan Edgington,
  • The Chronicle of Zimmern as a source for the First Crusade, Alan V Murray,
  • Cross-purposes: Alexius Comnenus and the First Crusade, Jonathon Shepard,
  • The First Crusade: the Muslim perspective, Carole Hillenbrand,
  • The Principality of Antioch and the Jabal as-Summaq, Thomas Asbridge,
  • Captured property on the First Crusade, William G Zajac.

From the cover:
This new study offers a fundamental reconsideration of much of the evidence available to historians and a wider appreciation of the impact the First Crusade had, both on the people of Western Europe and those of the eastern Mediterranean. The book brings together nine of the leading scholars in the field including John France, Colin Morris, Marcus Bull, Susan Edgington, Alan Murray, Jonathon Shepard, Carole Hillenbrand, Thomas Asbridge and William Zajac, with a preface by Jonathon Riley-Smith.

Stimulating and accessible, this book is an important and original contribution to the study of the First Crusade.

About the editor:
Jonathon Phillips is Lecturer in Medieval History at Royal Holloway, University of London.
