Crusades Bookstore Review:
Although first published in 1951, this book remains a real classic on the subject.
Runciman's style and eloquence have never been bettered. Although modern research would
disagree on questions of emphasis - especially with regard to relations between the
Byzantines and the Franks - but the basic story still follows his line.
From the Cover:
Sir Steven Runciman has written a book which, from beginning to end,
enthrals the layman as completely as it satisfies the historian. The excitement of battle,
the horror of senseless massacre, the interplay of personalities and ambitions, the effect
on the whole development of European history - these are his themes. As he rightly states:
'The whole tale is one of faith and folly, courage and speed, hope and disillusion.'
This volume takes the story from its beginnings, through the preaching of the First
Crusade to an attentive Europe, up to the triumphant establishment of the Kingdom of
Jerusalem. The second and third volumes describe the Frankish years of glory in Jerusalem
and the final degeneration of Crusading ideals.
About the Author:
Sir Steven Runciman has held many university appointments in Great Britain
and America. He has been Chairman of the Anglo-Hellenic League and President of the
British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara, and belongs to many learned societies. His
publications include The Medieval Manichee (1947), The Sicilian Vespers
(1958), The Great Church in Captivity (1968), The Orthodox Churches and the
Secular State (1972), Byzantine Style and Civilization (1975), and Mistra
(1980). |
